Description
2 Hume's Close in Selkirk is a mid-19th century, two-storey terraced tenement with an attic, which may include some earlier fabric. The building features three bays and has shop accommodation on the ground floor. It is situated on sloping ground that falls to the northeast. The exterior is finished in painted droved ashlar with polished ashlar dressings at the ground level, while the upper part is made of painted squared whinstone with polished ashlar margins and droved ashlar tails. There is a band course at the lintel height of the ground floor and a cill course for the first-floor windows, along with an eaves course.
On the northeast elevation facing Market Place, the first floor has regularly spaced bays, each containing a window. The centre features a modern glazed door with a rectangular plate glass fanlight above it. To the left, there is a plate glass fixed-pane shop window, while the bay to the right is partly blinded. There is also a panelled door on the outer left.
At the rear of the building, there are four two-storey terraced houses that project at right angles from the Market Place front, stepping down the slope. Each house has three bays, except for the two-bay house to the northeast. The materials used for these buildings include two harled houses, one made of squared whinstone with red sandstone dressings, and one that is cement-rendered.
The first floor of the northeast elevation has modern glazing. The building has a slate roof with brick mutual stacks and half-piended dormers on the outer bays of the northeast elevation. The rear additions also have slate roofs with varying ridge heights and pitches. The interior was not seen in 1996.
