Description
The Old Parish Church and Burial-Ground in Kirk Wynd, Selkirk, dates from 1748 and is now a ruinous, roofless church with an associated burial ground featuring 17th and 18th century tombstones.
The church, known as Old Parish Kirk, has rubble walls and a round-arched opening to the northeast, topped with a red sandstone stepped wallhead that supports a bellcote. Inside, there is possibly the oldest surviving gravestone set into the southwest wall, depicting a full-length figure and coat of arms, likely from the late 16th century. The interior also contains gravestones commemorating the Murray family, who are maternal ancestors of Franklin D. Roosevelt.
The burial ground, referred to as Auld Kirkyard, includes several large stones and enclosures surrounded by cast-iron railings. Notable individuals commemorated here include Andrew Lang (1844-1912) and James Brown (1832-1904).
The boundary wall, railings, gates, and gateway are constructed from whinstone rubble with ashlar coping. A quadrant wall with wrought-iron railings is located to the northeast along Kirk Wynd, leading to a round-arched gateway adorned with a cornice and parapet, which features wrought-iron two-leaf gates. A plaque notes that the street was widened and improved by ex-Provost George Roberts of Dandswall, Selkirk, in 1910.
