Description
Coldstream Bridge is a road bridge built between 1763 and 1766 by John Smeaton, with some alterations made in the 20th century. It features five segmental arches and two side flood arches, spanning the border between Scotland and England on the A698 over the River Tweed. The bridge has four battered semi-octagonal cutwaters positioned between the arches, each adorned with triple projecting keystones and decorative ashlar-edged oculi in the spandrels. A plain dentilled cornice runs along the base of the parapet. The structure is made of squared and dressed sandstone, with random whin rubble used for the roundel oculi. Additionally, there are cantilevered concrete footpaths on either side of the roadway, added between 1960 and 1961.
