Kelso Town Hall, The Square, Kelso

Kelso Town Hall, located in The Square, Kelso, was built in 1816 in a Classical style and significantly remodeled in the Edwardian Baroque style by J D Swanston and Syme of Kirkcaldy between 1904 and 1906. The building features five by two bays and is two stories high, with the central three bays slightly projecting and adorned with a pedimented Ionic portico at the first floor. The ground floor has a rusticated basement that originally included an open arcaded loggia, which was filled in with windows in 1906, and a new pedimented Baroque doorpiece was added at the center. The Ionic columns of the portico were elevated on pedestals with a balustrade in between. The first-floor windows were enhanced with block rusticated architraves and aprons, and the end bays were topped with pediments. Above the cornice, the original balustrade was removed. The roof is piended and platformed, covered with slate, and features an octagonal timber cupola that houses a clock from 1841. This cupola was given a leaded bell-cast roof and Gibbs-surrounds for the belfry openings during the 1906 renovations.
