Description
Lothian and Borders Co-Operative Society Ltd, located at 24 Chapel Street, is an 1882 building that features two stories and an attic, designed in a roughly L-shaped plan. The structure has seven bays and showcases 14-bay colonnaded shopfronts at the ground level. It is constructed from coursed, stugged sandstone, with raised stop-chamfered margins around the first-floor bi-partite windows. The rear is made of painted whinstone rubble and brick. The building includes a fascia cornice and an eaves band course.
The former shopfronts are distinguished by delicate round sandstone columns with floreate capitals that separate the window bays. There are also a pair of canted roof dormers with slated cheeks and finials. To the southeast, a single-storey wing forms part of the L-plan, featuring a tall brick stack and blocked openings. At the rear, there is a brick tower and a pair of splayed external brick and concrete stairs.
The windows predominantly consist of plate-glass in timber sash and case style, with lower sashes vertically subdivided on the rear elevation. The shopfront has fixed casements and blanked windows. The roof is pitched with grey slate, including a piended section at the north end. Stone skews with beaked skewputts, along with rectangular gable end and ridge stacks, complete the exterior. The building also features cast-iron rainwater goods.
