Description
Seaside House in Errol is a classical two-storey house with an attic and basement, built around 1800, possibly by John Paterson. The house features five bays and a blind Doric portico, with a piend and platform roof topped by a circular cupola. It is constructed from snecked squared rubble with droved ashlar margins, and includes a moulded cill course, band courses, and an eaves cornice with a small blocking course. The entrance has a segmental headed doorpiece flanked by paired columns and a corniced balustrade, with voussoirs and stone mullions.
On the northwest elevation, the central bay has a stair with iron railings leading to a broad panelled timber door, flanked by lights and a sunburst-astragalled fanlight. Above the door is a balustrade leading to a wide tripartite window, with the outer lights blinded. The slightly set back outer bays have regular fenestration on each floor, including the basement.
The southeast elevation features a conical-roofed bowed centre bay with three windows on each floor, and regular fenestration in the flanking bays. The southwest elevation has a central basement door and various openings in the outer bays, with regular fenestration in three bays on each floor above. The northeast elevation contains three windows on each floor, with a small timber door to the outer left in the basement.
The windows are timber sash and case with a 9- and 12-pane glazing pattern. The roof is covered with grey slates and includes cast-iron rooflights, along with droved ashlar stacks.
Inside, the house has a well-preserved decorative scheme, featuring a galleried circular hall with a classical cornice and frieze, and a further swagged frieze around the glazed conical cupola. Six-panelled architraved doors radiate from the central hall. The drawing room includes an Adam style carved fireplace, which is not original, along with other timber fireplaces and cast-iron grates. The kitchen features a large arched fireplace with a bread oven marked 'C H & G NICOLL MAKERS DUNDEE', and there are vaulted cellars.
