Description

Colquhalzie House is a prominent building dating from 1729 or shortly thereafter. The central block is harled and whitewashed, featuring stone dressings and a two-storey and basement structure to the south, while it rises to a full three-storey at the north. The south façade has five windows, with the central three being more prominent and advanced, topped with a pediment. The outer windows are smaller and narrower. A fine architraved doorpiece with lugs and a segmental pediment enhances the entrance. The north front showcases a large projecting canted bay with three windows on the first floor, including a central (dummy) circular window on the north face, and one window on either side. The building is capped with a tall piend roof and features four chimneys, two at the front and two at the back.

Inside, there is a notable hall staircase with fine twisted balusters, similar to those at Woodend in Madderty, which has been somewhat altered at ground floor level but recently restored to its probable original condition by T. Beveridge. The interior also includes sepia mural decoration by Wm. Feilding from 1967. A large octagonal dining room features a cove and a pedimented chimneypiece adorned with sheet music and wind instrument panels, along with an elaborate Venetian alcove and cartouche busts at the cove, showcasing plasterwork from the Calderwood-early Clayton school. While other rooms have undergone alterations, the southeast room retains original plaster panelling.

The west wing, dated JSH 1826 HS, matches the height of the main block and has one window to the south and three windows to the west, with an advanced one-window section to the north. The interior of this wing has been remodelled, and the symmetrical wings were completed by constructing a similar east wing. Both wings contain bolection moulded chimneypieces believed to originate from the basement of the original house. The basement area has also been improved by John Stewart (Stewart & Paterson) in 1929.
