Description

The chapel at Murray Royal Asylum on Muirhall Road in Perth was designed by Dr. A. R. Urquhart and built between 1903 and 1904. It is a four-bay Gothic structure featuring buttresses and crow-stepped gables, with a central entrance tower topped by a timber and lead octagonal cupola and a tall weather vane. The chapel has a canted apse to the northwest. The high base course and tower are made of cyclopean (polygonal) whinstone, while the nave is constructed from rock-faced red sandstone.

The entrance elevation on the northeast side includes a round-arched central entrance opening with a pair of decorative iron gates and a timber inner door adorned with decorative hinges. Smaller round-arched window openings flank the entrance, and the exterior is enhanced by crocketted and pinnacled buttresses, along with some windows featuring tracery.

The roof is covered with green slates, and the windows primarily consist of lead-pane fixed glass.

The interior, observed in 2014, retains much of its original decorative scheme, including timber panelling and painted walls in the nave, while the sanctuary features bare stone walls. The ceiling is a slatted timber barrel vault, and there are decorative timber elements such as the pulpit, communion table, and lectern. Additionally, some stained glass windows are present in the sanctuary.
