Villa, Murray Royal Asylum, Muirhall Road, Perth

The building is a pair of nearly identical villas located at the Murray Royal Asylum on Muirhall Road in Perth, designed by Maclaren and Mackay in 1904. These two-storey, four-bay (six-bay to the rear), half-timbered villas feature multiple gables and single-storey rounded bay extensions, positioned on a sloping site flanking the hospital chapel. The exterior is finished in cream render with red sandstone margins and has overhanging eaves. The entrance elevations face east and include central loggias supported by pairs of red sandstone columns. Upper storey canted oriel windows and various ground floor windows, including four-light and tri-partite designs with stone mullions, add to the architectural interest.

The windows are predominantly timber, although many were boarded up in 2014. The roofs are covered with grey slates and feature gently battered wallhead stacks.

The interiors were observed in 2014, and the original room layout in both villas remains largely intact. Notable interior features include a timber dog-leg staircase with timber balusters and newels, round-arched niches in the main hall with some timber decoration, and simple cornicing.
