Description

William Burn, 1821 (opened 1827). Extended by Burn in 1833; extended by Andrew Heiton Junior in 1888. Large, symmetrical, 3-storey, T-plan, former asylum with dominant octagonal central tower with cupola, with later L-plan single and 2-storey wings added symmetrically to rear (north west), situated on sloping ground. The building is of coursed sandstone ashlar with contrasting sandstone margins. There are band courses, raised cills and a blocking course. The main entrance elevation to the south east has an advanced central section with a further advanced Doric porch and advanced end bays. There are a variety of window openings including tripartite and wide, segmental-arched windows.

The windows are predominantly multi-pane or plate-glass in timber sash and case (some are boarded). There are piended roofs with grey slates and some ridge and wallhead stacks.

The interior was seen in 2014. Much of the early 19th century interior room layout and later 19th century decoration survives. There is a central octagonal hall with slender iron columns and decorative wrought iron railings to each floor. The rooms are disposed along long spine corridors. There are a some rooms with significant decorative plasterwork, including a large former ballroom with stage and fluted timber columns, a library with a decorative plaster ceiling and some of the other rooms with decorative cornicing and canted corners. There are a number of decorative timber fire surrounds surviving, some with overmantels. One room has integral coloured glass and timber bookcases and others have integral cupboards. There are timber and glass verandahs to the west.
