Description
North Esk Villa, formerly part of Sunnyside Hospital, was built in 1902. This three-storey, five-bay villa features an irregular plan and distinctive crow-stepped gables, with ogee arch detailing around the windows. The exterior is constructed of pinned and coursed rubble with ashlar margins and includes a base course. The entrance porch is located in the re-entrant angle to the west and has segmental-arched openings.
The south elevation is symmetrical, with the central three bays showcasing a pair of large, three-light segmental-arched window openings at the ground level, complete with stone transoms and mullions. Above these, the window openings are set within full-height, recessed, moulded ogee arches, topped by crow-stepped gableheads. A carved date is visible above the central window on the first storey, and there is a variety of decorative mouldings above the window openings. The slightly advanced flanking end bays feature parapetted five-light canted bay windows at the ground level, with paired windows above set within large, ogee-arched recesses.
The west elevation, which serves as the entrance, consists of seven bays. It has an advanced two-bay crow-stepped bay on the left, with windows set in recessed, moulded, full-height ogee arches. There is also a further advanced two-bay lower section on the far left. The entrance porch is single-storey and parapetted, located in the re-entrant angle, featuring segmental arches and a tiled floor. The wide round-arched inner doorway is fitted with a panelled timber entrance door and a fanlight above.
The east elevation has five bays, with an advanced crow-stepped gabled bay on the left that includes a parapetted five-light canted bay window at the ground level.
The villa predominantly features single-pane or four-pane timber sash and case windows, grey slate roofing with red ridge tiles, and cast-iron rainwater goods, along with decorative ridge ventilators.
Inside, as observed in 2012, the original room layout remains largely intact. The entrance hall boasts a fine timber staircase with carved timber balusters and handrail, complemented by Doric columns and segmental arches. The interior also features a timber and mirrored fire surround, along with other rooms that include timber panelling and segmental-arched recesses, as well as decorative cornice work on the ceilings.
