Description

Carnegie House, located within the Sunnyside Royal Hospital complex in Hillside, Montrose, is a former hospital building designed by William Kelly between 1895 and 1899. This two-storey and attic structure features 13 bays and exhibits a largely symmetrical Jacobean style with gabled roofs. The building is constructed from snecked rubble with ashlar margins, and it includes a base course, overhanging eaves, and finials at the gableheads. The façade has advanced and recessed bays, with bi- and tripartite window openings on the south elevation that have chamfered stone mullions and transoms, along with flat-roofed dormers.

The principal elevation showcases an advanced central gabled bay, which contains a moulded segmental-arched doorway adorned with decorative carvings in the spandrels. This doorcase features a lintel supported by small engaged columns on corbels, topped by a pediment with a central carved panel. Flanking the doorway are bipartite window openings, while above are large 18-light windows and a small oriel window. The recessed bays on either side have gabled 2-light wallhead dormers with carved circular decorations. The outer advanced bays are highlighted by parapetted, canted 7-light windows at ground level.

The windows display a variety of glazing patterns, including some with timber casement and small pane glazing above, timber sash and case, and others that are boarded. The roof is covered with grey slates and features raised skews, tall coped gable and ridge stacks, and cast iron rainwater goods.

Internally, as observed in 2012, the original room layout remains largely intact, showcasing fine decorative features. These include a timber panelled former dining room with a painted ceiling depicting Zodiac representations, an entrance hall with intricately carved timber fire surrounds, and other panelled timber rooms. The staircase is decorated with fluted columns, and there are panelled timber doors with decorative corbelled cornices, along with some painted glass.
