Description

The former Kinnaber Water Works in Hillside, dated 1910 and extended in 1960, is a large, distinctive building that served as a water filter plant. It features a symmetrical, gabled design with nine bays across three sections and a prominent crenellated tower on the north side. The structure is constructed of red brick in Flemish Garden Wall bond, with a base course and raised cills. The bays have almost full-height, slightly recessed panels, separated by pilaster strips, and the north and south elevations include segmental-arched window openings. The east and west gable elevations display a decorative sawtooth design at the wallhead, with the east gable featuring a dedication plaque. There are some timber sliding doors and single-storey lean-tos on the south side, although the building was not in use as of 2010.

On the north elevation, the central tower has four stages with narrow, segmental-arched windows. The north, east, and west elevations of the tower have pairs of symmetrical recessed full-length panels, with a cornice at the third and fourth stages. A slightly advanced central chimney is located at the fourth stage on the east side. A plaque on the west elevation is inscribed: "MONTROSE WATERWORKS, FILTER HOUSE, ERECTED 1910, EXTENDED 1960, W.STONE, PROVOST. H.HALL, CONVENOR."

Inside, as seen in 2010, there was no machinery present. The walls are made of white painted bricks, and the roof structure is timber. A tight iron spiral staircase with a banister is located within the tower, and some decorative moulding can be found around the window openings in the tower. Most windows are boarded, but some multi-pane timber sashes remain. The roof is primarily covered with grey and purple slates, with some areas of asbestos roofing and rooflights that have broken glazing.
