Description
Redgorton, Camserney is probably an 18th-century vernacular cottage with some alterations from the 20th century. It is a rare example of an early single-storey, three-bay, rectangular-plan cottage, which is attached to an altered cottage. The building retains a remarkably intact roof structure covered with corrugated iron, featuring peg-jointed cruck couples and a two-leaf storm door. The exterior is finished in whitewashed random rubble with small openings.
The southeast elevation has a symmetrical entrance with a centrally located two-leaf boarded timber door and deeply-set windows in the flanking bays. The southwest elevation includes a later door to the left and a timber gablehead above a large glass and timber conservatory. The northwest (rear) side features an enlarged tripartite window in the center. The timber sash and case windows have a four-pane glazing pattern, while the timber tripartite window has a six-pane glazing pattern. The roof is covered with corrugated iron sheets over thatch and well-preserved cabers, and there is a short coped rubble stack with a polygonal can on the southwest side.
Inside, as seen in 2007, the cottage has a simple two-roomed layout that retains exposed crucks and boarded timber doors. The living room, located to the southwest, features a monumental fireplace lintel and a pronounced batter on the southeast wall.
