Description
Smithy Cottage is a mid-19th century building, originally a smithy house, with a single storey and attic. It has a rectangular plan and features three bays, with the bays grouped to the left. The structure is built of random rubble and is whitewashed, topped with reed-thatch roofs that have concrete ridges. The thatch was restored around 1970 at the dormer windows and in the late 20th century at the smithy.
The cottage has a symmetrical entrance on the south elevation, featuring a two-leaf timber door and a rustic gabled porch at the center. There are windows in the flanking bays and two attic windows above, which include an eyelid thatched dormer. To the left, there is a lower single storey bay with a window. The windows are timber sash and case with a four-pane glazing pattern. The chimneystacks are made of coped ashlar and brick.
The former smithy, located to the south, has two boarded timber stable-type doors flanking a small bipartite casement window. It features a projecting chimney breast that is battered at the base and pierces the eaves on the right side. The east gablehead is also made of boarded timber.
Additionally, there is a limekiln situated to the northeast of the cottage. This small, roughly rectangular-plan structure is built of rubble and has an opening on the south side.
