Description

The Old Sawmill at Fingask Castle, built around 1915, is a two-storey structure with a loft and features an L-plan design in the Scots Renaissance style. The building is constructed from squared and snecked dark whinstone rubble, accented with tooled pink sandstone ashlar dressings. It has long and short quoins and a steeply-pitched, double-ridged pantiled roof with crowstepped gables and battered buttresses at the gable ends.

The ground and first floors have arcaded and voussoired openings, while the central loft hoist door is adorned with corbelled steps and wrought iron scrolled brackets, along with decorative carving on the north side. The east elevation is long and two-storey, featuring square windows at the first floor and a wide round-arched opening on the south return. There is also a wide, steel-linteled opening at the west re-entrant angle.

An adjoining wall, which is pantile-coped and stepped, creates an upper-level open court to the west, with a stone forestair leading to a lower level and an arched opening in the wall. The upper floor has 12-pane timber sash and case windows, although most were missing as of 2006. The roofs are steep-pitched with clay pantiles, and the recessed cast-iron rainwater goods are mostly broken or missing as of 2006.

Inside, little of the sawmill machinery remains, but there is a rectangular wheel pit and a steel wheel casing on the upper concrete floor to the east.
