Description

Sir Robert Smirke 1817-8, partly encasing earlier house.

Large 2-storey droved ashlar rectangular Castellated

block, square angle turrets E. corners, round angle

towers W. corners. E. front 5-window symmetrical with

3 storey centrepiece and Tudor porte cochere; S. front

7-window and 3-window bow; W. front 5-window; N. front

with full basement to sunk service court, complex

asymmetrical composition with canted bay at E. outwith

court, bow and square centre tower. Long crenellated

walls with towerlets screening service court, larder,

etc. Interior relatively simply treated, plain

staircase, ribbed ceilings, arched doors and veined

marble gothic chimneypieces.
