Description
Strathallan Castle, designed by Sir Robert Smirke between 1817 and 1818, partially encases an earlier house. This large, two-storey rectangular building is constructed from droved ashlar and features a castellated design. It has square angle turrets at the eastern corners and round angle towers at the western corners. The eastern front is symmetrical with five windows and a three-storey centerpiece that includes a Tudor porte cochere. The southern front has seven windows and a three-window bow, while the western front also has five windows. The northern front includes a full basement leading to a sunk service court, showcasing a complex asymmetrical composition with a canted bay at the eastern side outside the court, along with a bow and a square centre tower. The long crenellated walls are adorned with towerlets that screen the service court and larder. Inside, the interior is relatively simply treated, featuring a plain staircase, ribbed ceilings, arched doors, and veined marble Gothic chimneypieces.
