Description

5 Broad Street in Kirkwall is a mid-18th century building that has undergone later alterations and additions. This two-storey and attic, L-plan, partially crowstep-gabled former Provost's house has been converted into an estate agent and forms a courtyard, which is enclosed by a low wall, gatepiers, and railings along the street. The building features a two-bay gabled elevation facing the street and has a lean-to addition on the outer left side.

On the east elevation facing Broad Street, there is a window on each floor of the gabled, two-bay block to the right, with a gablehead stack above. The ground floor has an enlarged window in the left bay of the two-bay block, which is set back to the right, and a window above it on the first floor. There is an architraved doorway in the right bay at ground level, featuring a two-leaf, part-glazed timber-panelled door, with a window above on the first floor. The lean-to addition on the outer left also has a window.

The north return elevation includes a basket-arched doorway in the left bay at ground level, with a two-leaf timber-panelled door and a letterbox fanlight above it, along with a window on the first floor. There is a window in each floor of the bay to the right.

The building predominantly features 12-pane timber sash and case windows, with large timber-framed shop windows at ground level on the east side. The roof is primarily covered with grey slate, accented with purple Welsh replacement bands, and includes a stone ridge, stone skews, ovolo-moulded skewputts, and harled, corniced gablehead stacks. The rainwater goods are made of uPVC.

Inside, there are timber panelled rooms, although they were not fully seen during the inspection in 1998.

The boundary walls, gatepiers, and railings consist of low harled walls with a heavy cement arched cope along the east elevation, enclosing the courtyard. The square-plan gatepiers have moulded sandstone ashlar caps and are topped with a linking cast-iron lantern arch. The railings are made of replacement cast-iron and are downswept.
