Description

Greenwall House is a mansion dating back to 1656, with later alterations and additions, particularly around 1840. It is a two-storey and attic, near-symmetrical, rectangular building with a crowstepped gabled design and three bays. The exterior is constructed with harl-pointed random rubble, dressed with squared rubble and sandstone. There is an eaves course at the rear. A group of 19th-century farm buildings are located behind the main house.

The west (principal) elevation features a slightly projecting sandstone doorpiece with a roll-moulded and pedimented architrave, centered at ground floor. A weathered carved plaque with indistinct initials is set within the pediment, and a small window sits above it on the first floor. Smaller windows are positioned on the left side, while a blank wall section is visible to a single-storey lean-to addition to the outer left. The bay on the right side has been enlarged with windows at both the ground and first floors.

The east (rear) elevation incorporates a two-storey, three-bay lean-to addition spanning the original rear wall. Regularly spaced windows are present on each floor of each bay. A single-storey, flat-roofed addition projects to the outer right, with a blank wall section.

The south (side) elevation displays the gable of the main block on the left, with a window offset to the right on the first floor and in the attic. A stack rises above. A lean-to addition extends to the right, featuring windows offset to the right at both the ground and first floors, with a wallhead stack marking the junction of the roof types.

The north (side) elevation reveals a single-storey, two-bay addition to the right, with a window in each bay. A gablehead stack rises above the main house. A part-glazed door leads to a flat-roofed, single-bay addition projecting further to the left, with a window in its return side. Another wallhead stack marks the roof junction with the main block.

The windows are timber sash and case, with 4, 6, 9, and 12 panes. Three evenly spaced rooflights are present on the west-facing roof pitch, and two smaller rooflights on the east. The roof apex is covered in purple Welsh slate with a thick Caithness stone easing course. The three-bay rear addition has heavily tarred grey slate with large Caithness stone easing courses. A heavily tarred stone slab roof covers the lean-to to the north. Other features include a stone ridge, corniced and coped gable- and wallhead stacks, cavetto moulded skewputts on the west side, cast-iron rainwater goods, and a ball finial to the west gable. The interior of the main house was not inspected in 1998.

To the rear (east) of the main house is a roughly coursed rubble two-storey, three-bay rectangular-plan mill, with a stone forestair to the south gable. The east elevation has a window replacing a door at ground floor, centered between two flanking windows, with a smaller blocked opening. The west (rear) elevation has windows on each floor in bays offset to the right and left of the center. A stone flight leads from the east elevation to a boarded gable door on the south side, with a ball finial above. The mill's roof is of large Caithness slabs, with a stone ridge and corrugated-iron roofs to the additions. The mill's interior was not inspected in 1997.

North of the main house is an irregularly fenestrated, two-storey, L-plan roughly coursed rubble barn and byre, with various single-storey lean-to additions to the north elevation. It has grey slate, a stone ridge, and corrugated-iron roofs to the additions, as well as concrete skews. The barn's interior was not inspected in 1997.
