Walled Garden To Nw Of Melsetter House, Melsetter, Hoy

The walled garden to the northwest of Melsetter House in Hoy was remodeled between 1898 and 1900 by W R Lethaby, incorporating earlier structures. It features a rectangular plan and is bordered by a 19th-century cartshed to the west and a section of a remodeled wall to the east, with the north and south sides formed by the former laundry, known as Gardener's Cottage, and Spinning Cottage, respectively.

The cartshed is a long, single-storey structure with a monopitch roof, oriented north to south. It is built of coursed rubble that is roughly droved and stugged around the openings, topped with a stone slate roof and coped skews. The taller principal elevation faces inward to the east and originally had seven segmental-headed cart openings, although two on the outer left have been blocked with concrete blocks. There are entrances on the narrow north and south elevations.

The remodeled wall runs north to south and has openings dressed to face outward to the east. It is constructed of coursed rubble with ashlar dressings and features squared slab coping. The wall steps up around a central gateway, leading to a round-arched opening that has a re-used roll-moulded architrave, likely dating from the late 17th century, with a carved scroll projecting from the center above. There are small flanking window openings, including two original or early window openings to the outer left, with the outlines of other former openings visible on the west side.
