Description

The Hall at Melsetter, Hoy, is probably a mid-18th century building, with subsequent minor alterations. It comprises a single-storey main block with a hayloft, forming an "L" shape, and a former barn. The barn has crowstepped gables and regularly spaced ventilation slits to the hayloft. The building is constructed of coursed rubble, with remnants of harling and sandstone dressings. Chamfered reveals are present on the principal openings of the south, east and west elevations, and larger original openings have long and short surrounds throughout.

The south elevation features a principal entrance, now altered with a replacement sliding door, to the left of centre. A wide window has been inserted or enlarged to the left. A former entrance, now a window, is located to the right, featuring a deep lintel with an intertwined monogram, likely the initials "B W S M". Five regularly spaced ventilation slits are visible on the hayloft. Stone steps, with a coped parapet, extend to the outer right and continue around the corner to the east side, incorporating an outhouse belonging to the adjacent property, ‘The Laundry House’, within a harled base.

The north elevation includes a principal entrance (a plain timber door) to the right, with flanking windows and one to the left, formerly entrances. Three ventilation slits are positioned on the hayloft. A gable end of the rear wing projects to the outer right, featuring an entrance with a boarded timber door. A lean-to addition is on the outer right, with a window to the left and one to the return.

The west elevation showcases the gable end of the main block to the right, with a large window (originally a loading door) to the loft. The rear wing adjoins to the left, and has a former entrance, now a boarded window, near the centre, alongside a small, boarded window to the left.

The east elevation has projecting steps leading to a lower level, adjoining the adjacent property. A large window (originally a loading door) is above the gable. A lean-to addition adjoins to the right, with an entrance to the left.

Most windows are multi-pane, fixed timber frames. The roof is covered with stone slates. A coped, stugged mid-pitch stack, an addition to the west end of the main block (without cans), is present.

The interior reveals replaced roof trusses and a missing loft floor, although the original supporting beams remain in place. The flooring is a combination of timber and stone flags.

To the west are a pair of square-plan gatepiers dating from 1898-1900, designed by W R Lethaby. These are linked to the former barn by a small section of rubble wall, incorporating a band course at the apex with pyramid coping.
