Walled Garden, 49-51 Victoria Street, Stromness

49-51 Victoria Street in Stromness is a pair of houses built in the earlier to mid 19th century, with later alterations. The buildings are two stories tall and have a rectangular plan. The left house (No 51) has an asymmetrical design with two bays and a gable end, while the right house (No 49) is symmetrical with three bays, situated on ground that rises to the west. To the right (east) is the adjoining Youth Hostel at Nos 45 and 47, which is not listed. The exterior features pointed random rubble with cement-rendered and lined margins around the openings, and the first-floor windows are set close to the eaves.

On the north (principal) elevation, No 51 has a modern part-glazed door with a large rectangular fanlight and a small window to the right at ground level. There is a window on each floor to the left. No 49 features a modern part-glazed door with a large rectangular fanlight in the central bay at ground level, with a window above on the first floor. There are also windows in each floor of the flanking bays.

The west (side) elevation has a blank gabled bay with a gablehead stack. The buildings predominantly have 12-pane timber sash and case windows. The roof is made of old Orkney grey slate with a stone ridge, concrete skews, corniced rubble gablehead and ridge stacks, and thackstanes, along with uPVC and cast-iron rainwater goods.

The interior was not seen in 1997 as the properties were empty at that time. At the rear (west), there is a walled garden enclosed by rubble walls, which is long and rectangular in shape, situated on rising ground.
