Description

This building, located at 273-287 and 291-293 Brandon Street in Motherwell, was designed by Alexander Cullen in 1905. It is a three-storey, seven-bay, rectangular-plan, Jacobethan-style tenement with shops on the ground floor. The facade features paired Dutch gables flanking a central moulded wallhead stack, constructed from yellow ashlar sandstone. There are string courses between the floors and bipartite windows with stone mullions.

The principal elevation has timber-framed, plate glass shop fronts at ground level, with a semicircular arched entrance in the center that has a hoodmould. To the left, there is a two-storey, canted double bay, and a window to the right. A cill course marks the second floor, which terminates in a parapet with a block pediment. The scalloped nepus gable includes a small window at the gablehead and an obelisk. A balustraded parapet is present to the right, adjacent to the central wallhead stack. The bays on the right mirror those on the left, with an additional bay on the outer right.

The rear elevation has irregular fenestration and includes a single-storey flat-roofed addition with forestairs leading to the first floor. The northwest side elevation features a blind gable end, while the southeast side elevation is obscured by an adjoining building. The roof is covered with concrete tiles, and there are modern double-glazed windows, coped gable stacks, and cast-iron rainwater goods.

The interiors have modern shop fittings on the ground floor, while the tenements were not seen during the last inspection in 2001.
