Description

5-15 Muir Street in Motherwell is a three-storey, L-plan corner building designed by Alexander Cullen in 1892, featuring Jacobethan architectural details. The structure includes tenements, shops, and a public house on the ground floor, topped with a finialled polygonal roof at the corner. It is constructed from red sandstone ashlar with cavetto cornices at the ground, first floor, and eaves.

The southeast elevation facing Hamilton Road is asymmetrical and has five bays. It features a canted corner bay on the outer right with a small angled, set-back window at the ground level, which has a chamfered cill and a roll-moulded reveal, topped by a consoled entablature. To the left, there is a tripartite opening with engaged Tuscan columns flanking the mullions, and a window to the left. A modern plate glass shop front is set within a recessed painted ashlar portico on the outer left, supported by engaged spiral fluted columns. The first floor of the canted outer right bay has pilasters on raised plinths, with strapwork carved panels featuring central masks above the windows between the pilasters. The central bays have architraved regular fenestration, while the outer left has a bipartite window with a stone mullion and flanking consoled pilasters. The far right canted bay features octagonal mullions that rise to a bell cap pinnacle breaking the eaves, topped with an octagonal roof and a lead finial. The central bays have architraved windows, and the outer left has a bipartite window with stone mullions, flanked by engaged octagonal columns that rise to bell cap pinnacles framing a gablet roof.

The northeast elevation on Muir Street is asymmetrical with eight bays, mirroring the southeast elevation but with three additional central bays.

The southwest and northwest elevations are gable ends adjoining neighbouring buildings. The rear courtyard elevation features irregular fenestration and forestairs leading to the first floor.

Most windows have modern double glazing, except for the six-pane upper sashes and plate glass lower sections in timber sash and case windows on the four right bays of the northeast elevation. The roof is covered with grey slates and lead flashing, and features coped, kneelered ridge stacks with stepped shoulders. The building has cast-iron rainwater goods and cavetto moulded guttering.

The interiors of the public house and shops have modern fittings, while the tenements were not seen during the last inspection in 2001.
