Description
The Coatbridge War Memorial, designed by Edith Burnet Hughes in 1924, is a circular war memorial made of grey granite, featuring a classical colonnaded open tempieto style. It stands on a circular stepped plinth and includes a central copper urn, located on a landscaped corner site. The memorial is flanked by a pair of separate side panels. It is supported by six Corinthian columns with squared lotus leaf capitals, which hold up a plain corniced entablature that bears the carved inscription, "Erected to the memory of the men who gave their lives in the Great War 1914-1918." The base course features rectangular vertical panels carved with names, along with a metal circle and sword motif on the southwest side. There are later framed side panels on the north and east boundaries dedicated to those who served in the Second World War (1939-1945).
