Description

Langloan Primary School, built in 1914 by James Davidson and son, is a substantial two-storey, five-bay, U-shaped school building with Renaissance details. It’s constructed of broached red sandstone ashlar with polished ashlar dressings. The building features a rusticated battered base course, a string course separating the floors, an intermittent sill course, and a cornice. Prominent shouldered gables, windows set within small decorative surrounds (aedicules), and gablehead finials add to its character. The corners are marked by panelled dies topped with urn finials.

The south elevation is the principal facade and features four large, square-headed windows in bays one, three and five. Bays two and four contain three windows each. The outer bays project slightly and are gabled with stout, bracketed and fluted finials. The upper-floor windows in these bays are situated within bracketed aedicules with Corinthian pilasters and segmental arches. The central bay has an upper floor that juts out on corbels, incorporating a panelled apron and a small open pediment above a short blocking course.

The east elevation presents an advanced two-bay central section and coupled windows of varying sizes. Entrances are located in the returns on either side. The gable to the left mirrors those on the south side. A string course runs above the first floor, culminating in an arch over a shallow niche. A blocking course and a small gablet feature in the central bays, while a small semicircular, finialled pediment adorns the right side. A modern brick and steel ramp provides access to the entrance.

The north elevation is faced with squared snecked rubble in the outer bays, with the remainder rendered. A single-storey, flat-roofed modern extension is situated between the outer bays. The west elevation is similar to the east, with a single-storey, flat-roofed extension to the left and a full-height metal duct in the centre.

The school has panelled timber doors and modern aluminium windows. Large rooflights are set into the pitched roof, which is covered in grey slate and piended at the rear. Cast iron rainwater goods with decorative fixings are present.

The interior includes a large, double-height central hall featuring a cast iron balustrade to a gallery. A steel rod truss roof is covered by a modern ceiling. Segmental-headed openings lead to staircases, with stepped-glazed windows providing views from the hall to the classrooms. The ground floor windows are square-headed. Decorative arched vents with cast iron tracery are incorporated into the upper walls. Walls are boarded to dado height, with tiled dados on the stairs. Panelled doors feature etched glazing in the upper panels, while timber architraves and plain corniced overdoors complete the detailing.

The boundary is marked by squared sandstone rubble walls with chamfered coping, alongside cast iron railings with occasional wrought iron decorative sections. Square-plan piers, featuring a cornice and square urns on their capstones, define the boundary. A piended roof bicycle shed with cast iron columns is located in the north-east corner.
