Description
This former cattle market building, designed by A McGregor Mitchell in 1896, is a single-storey structure with a rectangular plan. It features red and yellow brick with ashlar dressings and a slate roof. The south gable has a base course and an ashlar-coped shaped gable topped with a ball finial. The façade includes bipartite 2-pane sash and case windows with corniced lintels.
The south gable has a centrally located two-leaf panelled door with a fanlight, flanked by brick pilasters with ashlar bases and capitals. Above the door is a broken-pedimented doorhead with a ball finial. There are windows on either side, with a diamond pattern in white glazed brick at the far left and right, and at the gable apex. A carved ox head is situated at the gable, with an ashlar panel below and a curved panel above that formerly displayed the words "COATBRIDGE AUCTION MART." Paterae are positioned to the left and right of the ox head.
To the west of the cattle market is a single-storey rectangular-plan lodge on the left, featuring a central door, a tripartite window to the left, and a bipartite window to the right. It has a pyramidal roof with a brick stack at the apex, and a red ashlar 'Glasgow style' arched gateway is located at the far left. On the right, at the corner with Merryston Street, there is a single-storey rectangular-plan outbuilding with two tripartite windows and a gambrel roof, which has additions at the rear.
The site is further defined by two channelled ashlar gatepiers with corniced caps at the centre, which are connected to the lodge and outbuilding by adjoining snecked rubble walls with volutes. Additionally, there is a stugged and snecked rubble boundary wall along Carradale Road, topped with saddleback coping.
