Description
Moorpark is a large, two-storey Italianate mansion house, built around 1860 to 1870. It was commissioned for William Knox, a local mill owner. The house is constructed of stugged ashlar stone, with ashlar dressings and a battered bullfaced ashlar plinth at ground level. Channelled angle pilasters add vertical definition to the facade.
The south entrance front is symmetrical, with three bays. A central porch provides access to the main door, which is recessed behind an elliptical archway. Flanking the porch are two bays which contain canted, round-headed windows with four lights, linked by the porch. The porch is supported by two Roman Doric columns and two piers. A balustrade runs above the canted bays and the porch, with a raised, small central pediment above the porch. Steps lead to the front door; the original balusters have been removed and replaced with square piers which support wrought-iron lamps. The first-floor windows in the outer bays are round-headed tripartite windows with pilastered jambs, mullions, and foliated keystones. The central first-floor window is a single round-headed light. A cornice and parapet run along the top of the building, with a balustrade and ball-finialed pediment above the outer windows, raised segmentally above the central window. Symmetrically placed corniced stacks rise from the roof. The interior has undergone alterations in the later 19th century.
