Description

St John's Church of Scotland, located on Bath Street in Largs, was originally built in 1843 and then rebuilt in 1886 by architect A.J. Graham, with minor alterations made in 1950. This Romanesque church features a four-bay rectangular layout and has a tall tower at the north-west corner and a vestry at the south-west corner, both connected by an arcaded narthex. The tower includes small round-headed openings that light the stairway and paired round-headed openings high on each face. It has an octagonal belfry with round-headed louvred openings and slender shafts at the jambs and angles, topped with a corbelled faceted spire that has a weather vane.

The vestry has a bowed front, divided by pilaster strips into three panels, with a round-headed window in each panel, featuring shafted jambs and moulded arches. A decorative eaves band extends to the left over the narthex, which has five moulded round arches, each supported by two slender columns with foliated capitals. Below the outer arches are doors, along with a rectangular window opening. There is also a louvered oculus framed with mask heads in the gable. The church has corbelled skews and slate roofs. The north elevation displays three tall windows, with jambs featuring slender shafts that support moulded round heads. A smaller window, similarly detailed, is located in the right bay and is partially blocked, with a rectangular inserted window and an oculus above. An apse and hall are located to the east, and a gallery to the south is accessed by a round stair tower with a flat conical roof.

Inside, the church has a nave with aisles and a gallery on the west gable, which features an arcaded balcony front. Some leaded glass panels are present within the interior.
