Description
This is an early 19th century house situated on Eglinton Street, Beith. It is two storeys high with three bays, featuring a central door and a segmental-headed pend, originally intended for carriage access, now with later replacement doors to the left. The front is constructed of squared whinstone with raised sandstone margins, droved tabbed surrounds, and an eaves course.
The rear elevation has a two-storey and basement plan, with a central square stair tower featuring a ground-floor door. There are basement access doors flanking the staircase and two bays to the left and one to the right. The rear is built of random whinstone rubble with sandstone margins, and remnants of harl are visible.
UPVC windows have replaced the original timber sash and case windows throughout, although one original 12-pane timber sash and case window remains at the rear. The roof is covered with grey slates, with straight skews, coped ashlar end stacks, and a circular clay can on the right-hand stack.
The interior includes a turnpike stair, partially visible during a 2003 inspection.
The house is a typical example of an early 19th century dwelling. Its whinstone construction is distinctive, aligning with other buildings in the area, including numbers 33-35, 37, 39-41 Eglinton Street, and 15-19 Main Street. Though whinstone was quarried in areas outside Beith, particularly to the north and east, and at Barrmill, it is a relatively uncommon building material in Ayrshire, typically used for road construction due to its hardness. The building is marked on the 1858 Ordnance Survey map.
