Description
This is a two-storey villa, built around 1825. It originally had three bays and now features two piended dormers. The villa sits on a plinth and has end pilasters that support an entablature. The front door is recessed and framed by reeded timber pilasters, with an astragaled fanlight above. A decorative doorpiece features Ionic pilasters and an entablature, topped with a central tablet. All windows have moulded architraves. A central corniced wallhead stack with scrolled brackets rises from the building, topped by an octagonal clay can. The exterior is lined and painted stucco.
The rear (northwest) elevation is two storeys with an attic and basement, and has four bays. It includes a projecting square stair tower and large, modern box dormers to the attic. The rear elevation is finished with modern harl.
The interior, partially visible in 2003, includes a common close leading to the rear, with cornicing and architraves. A turnpike stair leads to the first and attic floor flats. The first-floor flat showcases reeded architraves and corner roundels. The windows are now fitted with UPVC glazing.
The roof is covered with grey slates laid in diminishing courses, with a stone ridge, straight skews, and brick end stacks, some topped with circular clay cans.
In 1825, notes described the area of Eglinton Street as having "seven new houses built," contributing to an "elegant and respectable appearance" that reflected a thriving community. The villa is considered a typical example of its type, enhanced by decorative detailing. The classical doorpiece, architraved windows, and decorative wallhead stack together create a notable focal point, and their survival is important for both the building and the surrounding streetscape. The building is marked on the 1858 Ordnance Survey map.
