Description
This is a two-storey, three-bay house dating to circa 1810, located at 70 Eglinton Street, Beith. It is a typical early 19th century building, made particularly notable by its small pediment and apex stack, a characteristic feature of buildings in this region. Many similar buildings have lost their stacks, so their survival adds variety and interest to the streetscape. The building retains its prominence because there are no later dormers.
The front elevation features painted pebbledash with painted margins around the window and door openings, raised cills, an eaves course, and a cornice. A shallow central pediment sits above the doorway, topped with a corniced stack. A late 19th century timber-panelled door is present, complete with a letterbox fanlight. A window is visible to the right when looking from the interior, while a blocked window opening is located to the left.
The north-west (rear) elevation consists of two storeys and a basement, with a later three-storey brick addition to the center. The rear elevation is constructed of sandstone rubble, with remnants of original lime harl.
The interior has been altered, but retains a cast-iron balustrade and a mahogany handrail. Replacement UPVC glazing, likely 12-pane, is present, along with aluminium glazing on the ground floor installed before the building was listed. The roof is covered in grey slates, with a coped ashlar end stack topped with later cans, and a circular clay can at the apex of the stack.
The building is marked on the first edition Ordnance Survey map of 1858. Additional information has been provided by Mr J Gilius.
