Description
This is an early 19th century, two-storey and three-bay flatted dwelling situated on Eglinton Street, Beith. The front elevation features a narrow central door and is finished with a later harl coating, raised and painted margins, eaves course, and cornice. The rear elevation includes a two-storey and basement curved stair tower with stone steps and cast-iron railings, along with flanking windows. The building's roof is now covered with concrete tiles, replacing original grey slates; a straight stone skew is visible on the left, and there is a small brick gable stack, likely added later. Windows are non-traditional, with uPVC frames on the upper floors.
The interior, partially inspected in 2003, features a communal close with a timber two-leaf door with fielded panels, offering access to a garden at the rear. A stone turnpike stair leads to the first-floor flat, and some reeded architraves with corner roundels remain.
Originally a standard, symmetrical villa, the building has suffered alterations that have diminished its character. The addition of piended dormers, the replacement of slates with concrete tiles, and the installation of uPVC windows have impacted its appearance. The thick cement harl further obscures the original fabric. Consequently, it was downgraded from a Category B to a Category C(S) listing. It is still listed due to its prominent position within the streetscape, and because sufficient original character remains, it would benefit from future restoration of its traditional features. The building is marked on the first edition Ordnance Survey map of 1858. The statutory address registered is 66 Eglinton Street.
