39, 41 Eglinton Street, Beith

This is an early 19th century, two-storey, two-bay former house located on Eglinton Street, Beith. It was originally built shortly after number 37 Eglinton Street, around 1805, and shares the same materials and form. The building is constructed of painted, cherry-caulked whinstone with droved sandstone tabs, featuring raised and painted window and angle margins, an eaves course, and a moulded eaves cornice. It originally had a single window to the ground floor on the right-hand side.

The original windows are 12-pane timber sash and case windows. The roof is slate, with a coped ashlar end stack, and the rainwater goods are cast iron.

The interior of the first floor, which is now used as an annex to number 37 Eglinton Street (a separately listed building), is accessed through a timber panelled door with an 8-pane letterbox fanlight originating from number 37. A room at the front of the first floor retains its original timber panelled doors and window embrasures with shutters.

It is believed that the arrangement with number 37, including a connecting stair built at the rear, came about in the early 20th century. At this time, a pend was likely created on the ground floor, which now functions as a shop or workshop (potentially a smithy). The building is marked on the first edition Ordnance Survey map of 1858.
