Description

This is a two-storey, three-bay former flatted dwelling, built in the later 18th century, with a rear range likely dating to the early 19th century. The front of the building is a terraced structure with a more recent shopfront installed on the right-hand side, featuring an enlarged window and door. The front is constructed of painted whinstone rubble, with painted droved sandstone tabs, a raised and painted base course, window margins, and an eaves course.

The rear elevation consists of a two-storey sandstone rubble range set at a right angle, with droved ashlar margins. Adjacent to this is a two-storey rubble outbuilding, likely originally a stable and probably dating to the late 18th century; it is now roofless but retains the remains of a doocot in its gable.

The windows are timber sash and case, with four panes to the first floor (astragals have been removed). One remaining window on the ground floor on the left-hand side is a 12-pane sash and case, with later glazing and doors. The roof is covered with concrete tiles, replacing traditional slates.

The interior has been opened up to create an open-plan ground floor, with a central passageway leading to the rear. On the first floor, a large bed recess, designed to accommodate two beds, is located in the front left-hand room.

Originally, a central close would have provided access to ground floor flats on either side and to the rear courtyard and outbuilding. This outbuilding may have initially served as a stable, with living accommodation above, potentially accessible via a passageway. One first-floor dwelling comprised a principal room, two windows wide, with a large, windowless bed recess on its back wall, and a smaller room to the right. The rear range was later used as a cobbler’s shop and is likely a later addition, built from a different material than the main building. The outbuilding later functioned as a scout hall.

The building would originally have resembled number 37 Eglinton Street (listed separately), displaying exposed whinstone rubble and droved sandstone tabs, before being painted. Number 37, built around 1805, is slightly later than number 33/35, demonstrating a higher wallhead and more refined internal arrangements and decoration.

The building is marked on the 1858 Ordnance Survey map.
