Bavarian Summer House, Brodick Castle, Arran

The Bavarian Summer House at Brodick Castle on Arran was built in 1845. This single-storey, 12-sided rustic summerhouse is situated on rocks at the edge of steeply falling ground to the south. It features timber post and panel construction and is externally decorated with intertwined rhododendron branches. The roof is made of grey slate with a facetted design, overhanging eaves, and a pointed finial. There are six pairs of opening casement windows below semi-circular arched deadlights, which are divided into pairs of lancets. The windows include cast iron diagonal glazing bars and diamond-pane glazing. The entrance has double softwood doors adorned with a pattern of rhododendron roots and an octagonal brass door knob, set within a segmental arch doorway.

Inside, as seen in 2010, the summerhouse has a half-height lining of split unplaned logs. The frieze features panels with geometric patterns made from applied fir cones. The ceiling is decorated with fir cones and hazel poles arranged in a geometric pattern, with a multi-point star at the center. There are painted timber benches fitted against the walls and a timber boarded floor.
