Description

Brentor, located at 4 Matheson Road in Stornoway, Lewis, is a double villa built in 1886. This symmetrical, two-storey building features an iron-railed boundary wall and is considered one of the most attractive examples of its type. The villa has four bays arranged in a 1-2-1 pattern and is crow-stepped towards the street. It is constructed from blue-green stone, squared and laid in regular courses, with ashlar detailing.

The design includes paired inner doorways with panelled doors and rectangular fanlights, which are connected by a continuous cornice and positioned beneath a wide wall-head gable. The outer bays feature canted ground floor windows, while the first-floor windows have crow-stepped dormer heads. The house on the left, known as Fasgadh, retains its original plate glass and four-pane sash windows, while the right side has modern glazing, though the central horizontal division remains.

The villa has skews over the end gables, apex stacks, and a slate roof. The north flank is finished with painted render, while the south flank and rear outbuilding are clad in artificial stone. The boundary wall extends west along Springfield Road and is topped with decorative cast-iron railings, with the original paired gates still intact.
