Description
The Shawbost Free Church is a box-shaped, Gothic-style church, likely dating from around 1880 or 1890. It was probably built by analogy with, and is similar to, the church at Carloway, which is dated 1884. The church’s exterior is finished with a modern dry-dash rendering. The original small-paned windows remain, mainly sash windows; a gable-head window on the west front, at gallery level, has timber Y-tracery. The pointed doorway is located below, and an apex belfry sits above. The roof is slated, with a pair of axial ventilators. An outshot on the south flank is likely not original and the surrounding perimeter wall appears modern, incorporating a lavatory block at the front. The building remains in use as a place of worship.
