Description

Speymouth Parish Church is a T-plan structure designed by architect and contractor James Ogilvie, originally built in 1732-3, enlarged in 1799, and renovated in 1885. The church features a red harled exterior, which was renewed in 1986, over a base of red rubble, with tooled red sandstone dressings. The south elevation has four long round-headed windows, with a round-headed doorway in each outer bay, and a small central mural sundial. Each end gable is illuminated by a circular gallery window added in 1885, along with a round-headed window on the ground floor. The windows feature Y-tracery and leaded glazing. A bellcote, dated 1733, is located at the apex of the west gable, and the roof is covered with local slate.

Inside, the church has a traditional layout that was refurbished in 1885. The centre pulpit is positioned against the south wall, and there is stencil decoration on the panelled gallery, which is supported by slender cast-iron columns with decorative painted capitals. A notable feature is a four-panel pew-back dated 1634, originally from the old Dipple parish church, which is hung on the west wall and carved with armorials, text, and the initials VH and LI. Additionally, there is a late 19th-century mural cast-iron drinking fountain at the west gable, made by I Kennedy of Kilmarnock. The church is surrounded by a rubble wall, with simple gatepiers and a pair of cast-iron gates at the south entrance.
