Description
Alves Primary School, built by A and W Reid between 1873 and 1874 and dated 1875, is a single-storey, gabled, five-bay school with a symmetrical south-facing frontage. The building features tooled rubble with tooled ashlar dressings. The central bay is advanced and gabled, containing a hoodmoulded doorway with a datestone above, flanked by windows with shouldered lintels. The outer bays are also advanced and feature mullioned and transomed windows. At the eastern end, there are two gabled bays, and the western elevation has a projecting canted wing that includes the entrance.
The windows are fitted with multi-pane glazing, and the building is adorned with decorative bargeboards, coped stacks, and slate roofs.
Additionally, there is a former infant school hall, which is a small single-storey, three-bay gabled structure. It is constructed of tooled rubble with tooled ashlar dressings, featuring an advanced and gabled central porch with flanking bipartite windows and similar fenestration at the rear. This hall also has multi-pane glazing, an end stack, and a slate roof.
The school complex is enclosed by a rubble stone wall.
