Description
The Russell Burial Enclosure, located at the Old Parish Church in Alves, dates back to 1769. This long, narrow rectangular church features distinctive narrow eight-bay windows on the south elevation. The exterior is harled with ashlar margins and dressings. A round-headed entrance is situated in the east gable, alongside a re-set aediculed and pedimented mural monument dated 1677 and 1722 to its right. The south elevation is lit by seven narrow, round-headed long windows, with shorter and wider windows in bays three and five. There is a similarly styled doorway in the outer southwest bay, which has a blind narrow round-headed light above it. The east and west gables each have a single gallery window. The multi-pane glazing is in poor condition, with some shutter hooks still present. At the apex of the east gable, there is a birdcage bellcote topped with a slightly concave cap and a ball finial, also dated 1769, and the church has a slate roof.
Inside, the church is empty, with all furnishings removed. The burial ground surrounding the church is irregularly shaped and has been extended to the east, featuring various 18th-century and later tombstones. In the southwest corner, there is the Russell burial enclosure, which dates to 1725. This enclosure is made of squared and rusticated ashlar with a balustraded wallhead and a moulded lugged doorpiece. There are two entrances to the burial ground, each with simple square gate piers; the entrance at the east end is from the late 19th century.
