Description
Estate Bridge at Muckle Burn, Dalvey House, is an early 19th-century structure with later 19th-century alterations, likely designed by architect W L Carruthers from Inverness. This single-storey, southeast-facing pair of cottages features a slightly hump-backed twin-arched rubble bridge. The bridge has tooled ashlar segmental arch rings that spring from tooled ashlar abutments. Doorways are located in bays 2 and 5, each covered by tall multi-pane glazed lights that rise through the wallhead, supported by weatherboarded segmental-headed triangular cutwaters. There are three drainage vents on each side and a single blind oculus in the centre of the spandrels. The bridge also includes later 19th-century dormers and flanking windows with multi-pane casements. A central coped ridge stack sits atop a piended stone slate roof, which features a red pottery apex with a crenellated cope, while crenellated end piers rise from circa 1830 plinths with finials. Deep lean-to loggias with piended slate roofs are attached to the northeast and southwest gables, each supported by sturdy wooden pilasters. The bridge has an approximate span of 30 feet for each arch and includes a projecting wing at the rear.
