Description

Bernera is a single-storey and attic cottage built around 1840, with later alterations made around 1895, likely by architect W L Carruthers from Inverness. This symmetrical, cruciform cottage features an irregular three-bay south-facing façade constructed from coursed tooled rubble with tooled ashlar dressings.

The entrance is located in the outer bay at the southwest and is sheltered by a gabled porch supported by anta. The front displays projecting canted windows with pilasters and small round-headed lights. Each outer bay has a gabletted dormer, and the centre window is set in the return gables. The design includes a prominent central gabled bay that is advanced, while the southeast bay is set back. Windows are characterized by deep ashlar base courses, mullioned gothic lights, and there are single-storey, two-bay harled pointed rubble wings projecting at the rear, connected by a gabled rear entrance and a central corridor.

The glazing features Y-tracery in some windows, with multi-pane glazing used elsewhere. The roof is slate with decorative red 12-pane glazing, complemented by decorative bargeboards. The structure has a coped centre ridge with paired corniced and necked ridge stacks, as well as end stacks at the rear. The roof also features piended tile ridges and apex finials.

A modern single-storey extension has been added at the rear, which has a slate roof with projecting eaves. Decorative trellises frame the front and return gable windows.
