Description
Dallas Parish Church is a parish church dated 1793, which underwent alterations and internal completion in 1847, with further modifications by A and W Reid and Melvin in 1872. Additional changes were made by A Marshall MacKenzie in 1901 and J Wittet in 1903.
The church is a simple rectangular structure featuring a long four-bay south elevation and a slate roof. Its exterior is finished with harl pointed rubble and has tooled and polished ashlar dressings. The entrance is located on the outer south-east bay and features a doorpiece with a corniced lintel that incorporates re-used Ionic pilasters. The south elevation includes three long round-headed windows, with similar windows at the rear added in 1901. A Venetian-style east gallery window is present, which incorporates a former doorway that is fronted by a double staircase with a polished ashlar balustrade decorated with ball finials, likely serving a former Laird's loft. A small round-headed gallery window with multi-pane glazing is located in the west gable, which also features a dated bellcote at its apex. At the rear, there is a vestry dated 1903.
Inside, the church has a plain re-cast interior, probably updated in 1901, with a gallery at the east end. An early 19th century mural memorial can be found in the entrance lobby.
Additionally, there is a former watch house, an early 19th century gabled structure with a slate roof. Its end chimney has been sealed and is topped with a re-used carved stone lion.
The church is enclosed by a rubble wall burial ground that includes the watch house and a former market cross, which is separately designated as SM2206. The burial ground contains a large number of tombstones, primarily from the 18th and 19th centuries.
