Description

Edintore House is a two-storey and attic house with a porch, dated 1828 and with a porch added around 1840. It has three bays facing south, with slightly set-back single-storey, three-bay wings at each gable. The house is built of rubble with harled gable ends, and has dressed ashlar stonework.

The central entrance is fronted by a substantial single-storey, three-bay ashlar porch, dating from around 1835 to 1840 and constructed in the style of William Robertson of Elgin. The porch has bays defined by Doric pilasters. A narrow central entrance, with modern double doors, is flanked by wide windows featuring margined multi-pane glazing and panelled aprons, set above a deep ashlar basecourse. A reset armorial is in the tympanum, flanked by pairs of narrow inscribed datestones resting on a cornice ledge. Two later 19th-century canted dormers are located in the outer bays. The main house has 12-pane glazing, while the wings have 9-pane glazing. Coped end stacks rise from a local slate roof.

The interior features beaded panelled window shutters and doors, and moulded door surrounds. A former dining room has a buffet recess and delicate plaster decoration to the ceiling and cornice.

Datestones appear to have been removed from the front of the house when the porch was added and placed on the tympanum ledge. These are inscribed with “(L) Built An Dom MDCCCXXVIII” and “(R) Alexander Hay and Anne Burges.” Alexander Hay and Anne Burges were the only resident heritors in the parish in 1842.

Edintore was owned in 1798 by John Gordon of Greshop, Forres, and described as "the inheritance of his remote ancestors for many generations." A substantial late 18th or early 19th-century barn, now much altered, is situated to the east of the house; it is not included in this listing.
