Description

140-142 High Street in Dalkeith is an earlier 19th-century, three-storey corner building that is part of a pair. It features a half-pitched roof and has three bays (two on the left and one on the right) facing High Street, along with a curved corner bay in a recessed panel and three additional bays on the return elevation. The building is constructed of finely dressed ashlar stone, with a channelled design at the ground level. There is a band course at the ground, a cill course at the first and second floors, and an eaves cornice with a blocking course.

The corner entrance is marked by Tuscan columns that support a cornice and blocking course at the ground level. The first and second floors feature column-mullioned tripartite bow windows.

On the High Street elevation, there is a modern shop window at the ground level, while the first and second floors have regular window arrangements. The second-floor windows in the central and left bays are adorned with decorative wrought-iron window guards.

The Tait Street elevation includes two shop windows at the ground level, with regular window arrangements on the first and second floors. The left bay has a blind window.

The east elevation has one bay on the outer left with windows on the first and second floors. An adjoining building to the center and right is a three-storey, four-bay gabled tenement at No. 1 Tait Street, which extends eastward and features a half-consoled corniced canopy over the door to the left, along with modern alterations to the ground-level windows.

The north elevation is blank and has a broad replacement stack. The sash and case windows have a plate glass glazing pattern, with a 12-pane design on the east side. The building is topped with grey slates and has a tall replacement wallhead stack between the left and center bays on the south side.
