South Sundial, Newbattle Abbey House

The South Sundial at Newbattle Abbey House dates from 1635 and is made of sandstone. It features an octagonal base with four steps leading up to the pedestal, which is inscribed with the date 'A.D 1635'. The pedestal is adorned with four chimera that support the dial-stone. The dial-stone has a fluted base and a fan design on its underside, and it is intricately carved in two tiers. The lower tier includes a bronze gnomon in each panel, while the upper tier displays initials with a coronet, a Lothian sun motif with a coronet, armorial panels, and the initials EWL (William, Earl of Lothian) and CAL (Annie, Countess of Lothian) along with faces. Above this, there are four men's heads with scrolled beards, topped by four balls and an obelisk that is decorated with carved foliage, culminating in a ball and needle finial.
