Description

Newbattle House is a large house dating from 1625 to 1645, significantly altered and extended over the centuries. It was originally a two-storey house aligned east-west, with a crowstepped outshot to the north. A two-storey wing was added to the southwest in 1790, followed by a matching two-storey wing to the northwest and an internal stone staircase around 1812, creating a T-shaped plan. A third storey was added to the original 17th-century house in the later 19th century. The exterior is ochre harled.

The west elevation has five bays, featuring a recessed, panelled two-leaf entrance door with a fanlight and two flanking single windows. A first-floor window is centrally positioned above the door, with two flanking single windows. Stone steps lead to the door, accompanied by boot scrapers with stone surrounds on either side.

The north elevation displays a plain gable wall to the 1812 addition, with a single window on each floor in the left return. A tall, round-headed stair window is located to the left. A timber boarded door features a two-light letterbox fanlight, with a window above the door to the right. An advanced crowstepped bay sits to the left, partially covered by a later addition. Roll-moulded stone surrounds window openings at the first floor to the left and at each floor in the left return; and narrow windows flank the right return.

The east elevation shows roll-moulded stone surrounds to the first-floor window to the left and in the right-hand ground-floor return.

The south elevation includes a glazed door with flanking lights, mirroring a tripartite window above to the right (formerly a single window with roll-moulded stone surrounds). A window to the left is also framed by roll-moulded stone surrounds. The first floor features a mullioned tripartite window to the right and two single windows to the left, along with two single dormers that break the eaves. Stone-coped gabled dormerheads are present. An advanced bay exists to the left, with two ground-floor windows and a second-floor window in the right return.

Most windows are 12-pane timber sash and case, with painted ashlar surrounds, although some retain 6-pane sash and case windows with roll-moulded surrounds. The roof is slate, with a coped gable to the east. Ridge and gable apex stacks are present, with a gable apex stack to the advanced crowstepped north gable. The west addition has a piended roof with a platform and incorporates gable stacks with bases to the north and south. Lead ridges, polygonal clay cans, and cast-iron rainwater goods with decorative hoppers are also evident.

The interior includes an entrance hall with Victorian tiles laid in a geometric pattern, a stone dog-leg staircase, and original fireplaces. These include a white marble fireplace with an overmantel in the Morning Room, a black marble fireplace in the Dining Room, a timber Arts and Crafts fireplace with a carved quotation from Leighton in a bedroom ("Permit a poor brother to preach Jesus Christ and Eternity"), and a fireplace with Delft tile surrounds in another bedroom.

A tall rubble boundary wall encloses the garden, running from the south corner of the house along the roadside. It features a blocked doorway and swept ends, with ashlar coping and harling facing the roadside.
