Description

The Old Sun Inn, located on Newbattle Road in Newbattle, is a symmetrical two-storey, five-bay rectangular-plan house built in 1697 as a coaching inn. It is situated close to the road and opposite the entrance gates of Newbattle Abbey. The building is constructed from sandstone rubble with ashlar dressings, although there is modern construction at the rear.

The front elevation features a symmetrical five-bay design with a central door and an oval window above it, flanked by two windows on each floor. The central doorway is roll-moulded, and the door itself has six panels. To the left of the door, there is a small glazed port-hole.

The south elevation has been recently reworked in the 1990s, with some replacement quoins and repair work to the chimney stack. It includes raised channelled long and short quoins, a moulded stone band course, and stone carvings of grapes and flowers.

The rear elevation is harled and has modern, irregular fenestration with concrete surrounds, including an oval window on the upper floor and patio doors on the ground floor. A modern conservatory sits above a stone cellar, which is an addition to the house featuring a vaulted ceiling and a small well, with access from inside the house.

The north elevation is also harled and has a projecting three-tiered chimney breast for the ingleneuk fireplace. There is a single window at ground floor level to the right of the chimney.

The fenestration throughout the building was replaced in the early 1970s, featuring 12-pane sash and case windows on the principal elevation, except for the horizontally pivoted oval window. The rear has five rooflights, and the roof is clad in modern concrete pantiles with a plain ridge and raised skews. The east elevation has a corniced apex stack with three circular clay cans, while the north elevation has a harled corniced apex stack with a single clay circular can. The rainwater goods are made of UPVC and cast iron.

Inside, the interior has been altered, but the ingleneuk fireplace remains, featuring a voussoired arch and keystone, with some replacement stones. The stone back to the fireplace has been reworked, and there is a plaque in the fireplace bearing Lothian sun, crown, and crest emblems, which were found in a nearby river and recently re-sited. The house also has a central staircase.
