Description

This is a late 18th century house with subsequent alterations and additions from the 19th century, accompanied by a range of outbuildings. The main house is two storeys high and is constructed of rubble, with the east and south elevations having been harled. Flush ashlar defines the window and door surrounds.

The east elevation, facing Musselburgh Road, has three bays arranged asymmetrically with irregularly sized windows on both the ground and first floors. A lower wing, dating to the mid-19th century, is adjoined to the left and incorporated into the boundary wall. A boarded door is located on the right side.

The south elevation is gabled, featuring a single-storey, piended wing that was added at ground level.

The west elevation has windows on both the ground and first floors in two bays to the right. A smaller window is positioned to the left at ground level, while a tiny window sits to the left on the first floor. A lower, one-and-a-half storey range adjoins transversely to the outer left bay. This section is constructed of rubble with pantiles, featuring four windows on the ground floor and two windows breaking through the eaves within irregular dormerheads on the first floor. A truncated ridge stack is centrally positioned. To the right is a single-storey wing, slightly advanced, built of rubble with purple slates, a small window to the south return, a door to the left, and two four-pane windows; a rendered and lined shouldered wallhead stack is between the windows.

The north elevation has a window to the right of centre on the ground floor and a corresponding window to the right on the first floor. A modern, harled single-storey porch block has been adjoined to the right, providing access to the house via a door facing east.

The windows are generally sash and case with a twelve-pane glazing pattern. Coped skews are present. Tall, rendered and lined, shouldered gablehead stacks are found on the south elevation, with a truncated stack on the north gable and another centrally. The roof is covered in pantiles.

A single-storey, mid-19th century workshop range is adjoined at right angles to the north of the transverse range. This range consists of nine bays (3-3-3) on the east side, with a door in the third bay from the right, a blocked door in the third bay from the left, and the remaining bays containing windows. The glazing pattern here is mostly later twelve-pane fixed. A rendered ridge stack is on the right side of the workshop. A long, two-storey rubble range with an asbestos roof adjoins the workshop to the left, with a door to the right and a window flanking to the left on the south side. Irregularly sized openings are on the north side, with a former carriage arch at centre and a hayloft door to the left and a stone forestair to the right. The west gable is rendered and lined with a small window on the ground floor. A single-storey rubble range adjoins the two-storey range to the right, forming an 'M' gable. This section has coped skews, grey slates, a door to the right, a window above it to the west, a gablehead stack, six large multi-pane windows, and a machinery door to the right on the south side. Two low, pantiled and rubble lean-tos extend from W and N boundary walls.

The boundary wall of the Dalkeith Estate runs adjoined to the left and right of the south elevation and is listed separately. A yard is accessed from High Street, while entrance to the north yard is from the Estate via a large carriage arch and a door on the right.
